Abstract
Geografski informacijski sustav (GIS, eng. geographic information systems) je sustav za upravljanje prostornim podacima i osobinama pridruženih njima. U najstrožem smislu to je računalni sustav sposoban za integriranje, spremanje, uređivanje, analiziranje i prikazivanje geografskih informacija. Pojavio se kada i ostali informacijski sustavi, tj. pojavom računala. Općenito, sustav je skup povezanih objekata i aktivnosti koji svojim međuodnosima služe zajedničkoj namjeni. U GIS-u zajednička namjena je donošenje odluka pri upravljanju nekim prostornim aktivnostima. Zbog brzog razvoja tehnologije, rasta gradova i stupnja motorizacije te samim time razvitka javnog gradskog prijevoza dolazi do raznih problema u planiranju prometnih procesa, a GIS je jedan od alata za rješavanje takvih problema. GIS možemo smatrati tehnologijom (hardver i softver) ili strategijom za obradu informacija, ovisno o kontekstu. Svrha GIS-a je unaprijediti donošenje odluka koje su na bilo koji način u vezi s prostorom.

Geographic information systems (GIS) is a system for managing spatial data and associated attributes. In the strictest sense, it is a computer system capable of integrating, storing, editing, analyzing and displaying geographic information. GIS was created along with other informatic systems when computers had been started to develop. Generally, this system is assemblage of linked objects and activities which interrelationships are serving to common purposes. In GIS common purpose of its objects is to make decisions in management of some space activities. Due to the rapid development of technology, the growth of cities and the degree of motorization and therefore the development of public transport leads to various problems in the planning of transport processes, and GIS is one of the tools to deal with such problems.. Depending in which context we use it, GIS can be considered as technology(hardware and software) or strategy for processing informations. The purpose of GIS is making decisions which are linked with space in any term.
