Abstract
Od početka korištenja klasične PSTN (eng. Public Switched Telephone Network) telefonske mreže, potojala je potreba za prijenosom ostalih tipova medija osim samo zvuka. S implementacijom prvih digitalnih komunikacijskih mreža (npr. ISDN) višemedijski prijenos je postao moguć. S obzirom na karakteristike takvih mreža baziranih na komutaciji kanala, uz prijenos govora bio je moguć samo prijenos teksta i nepokretne slike. Takve mreže bile su suviše neefikasne u smislu iskorištavanja dostupnog kapaciteta postojećih linija. Današnje multimedijalne komunikacije prvenstveno su bazirane na IP (eng. Internet Protocol) mrežama s komutacijom paketa. Takav tip mreže donosi podršku za stvarnovremenske multimedijalne usluge poput video-poziva, telekonferencije, udaljenog učenja, telemedicine te ostale „over-the-top“ usluge zabavnog sadržaja kao što prijenos video sadržaja, video sadržaj na zahtjev (eng. video streaming) te online igre. Stoga, glavni cilj ovoga rada je pružiti čitaocu pregled mrežnih arhitektura koje podržavaju navedene multimedijalne usluge kao i ostale mrežne arhitekture koje koriste IP podmreže za prijenos televizijskog sadržaja.

Since the deployment of PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network), there has been a need for transfering other types of media than just voice. With the implementation of first digital communication networks (eg. ISDN - Integrated Services Digital Network) that has became possible. But still, the curcuit-switched nature of those networks meant that only text and still picture could be transported over them beside voice. They were too inefficient at using the available bandwidth capacity of the underlying network. Today's multimedia communications are based primarily on the IP (Internet Protocol) packet-switched networks. Those types of underlying networks can easily support real-time multimedia applications such as video calls, teleconferencing, distant learning, telemedicine, as well as „over-the-top“ entertainment services like video on demand, video streaming and online gaming. Therefore, the main focus of this paper is to provide an overview of the network architectures primarily for those types of applications as well as other multimedia network architectures with proprietary IP networks for delivering television content.
